Chris Reeve
Collaborating designer
Chris Reeve is the founder of Chris Reeve Knives and the designer of the Sebenza and Umnumzaan folders. His Shirogorov collaborations include the UniQuantum and the Hati CGG.
Career
Reeve began building custom knives in 1984 in Durban, South Africa. In 1989 he and his wife Anne relocated the operation to Boise, Idaho, and in 1993 incorporated Chris Reeve Knives. The Sebenza, introduced in 1991, introduced what is now known as the Reeve Integral Lock (RIL), a titanium framelock derived from the Walker linerlock. The Sebenza and its descendants set the market reference for a modern titanium framelock folder.
Industry contributions
Reeve worked with Dick Barber of Crucible Materials Corporation on the development of CPM S30V in 2003, a stainless steel specified for knife use rather than adapted from a different industrial application. The RIL, the S30V effort, and Reeve’s fit-and-finish standards have shaped what production and semi-custom knifemakers treat as baseline for the category.
Shirogorov collaborations
Reeve’s collaborations with Sergey Shirogorov are the Custom Division UniQuantum and the Hati CGG. Both pieces carry Reeve’s design signatures onto Shirogorov’s chassis: framelock architecture, tolerance discipline, and clean structural detail. The runs are short and traded primarily through the Custom Division channels rather than the workshop’s serial dealers.
