For someone about to buy a first Shirogorov, or deciding whether to. Each answer is short and names the page that goes deep. The choice itself is worked through on Choosing your first Shirogorov, the tiers on the tier ladder, and the words on the glossary.
First answers
What is Shirogorov?
Shirogorov is the Shirogorov Brothers Workshop, a maker of folding knives in Yaroslavl, Russia, founded by Sergey and Igor Shirogorov and run by Sergey since Igor’s death in 2015. It builds eight serial lines of titanium flippers, limited Sprint Runs, a Custom Division tier inside the workshop, and Sergey’s own full customs. Its knives reach buyers through the dealers and distributors on its own list. A listing that says only “Shirogorov” can mean any of the four, which is what the ladder on the tier ladder sorts out.
Why are Shirogorov knives so expensive?
Mostly the action. Pick one up and the blade falls shut under its own weight on a bearing pivot, on a titanium frame machined and finished to the workshop’s standard. That is the part a buyer notices in the first ten seconds. Behind it sit small runs, numbered pieces, a factory that publishes what it makes, and a collector market that tracks every one of them, which is why a sold-out variant can cost more used than it did new. Whether a particular asking price is right is a question for Buying, selling and value.
What are the model names?
Eight serial lines. The F95 is the 95 mm frame lock the workshop is built on, and the F3 is the same blade length on a liner lock under scales. The 111 is the large one, named for its 111 mm blade. The Hati is the asymmetric lightweight, the NeOn the 85 mm compact, the Quantum the modern frame lock, and the Stellar and Astrum the newer apron liner locks at 90 mm and 100 mm. Ursus is the working line built on those platforms in Micarta, G10 or plain titanium. Every line has its own overview under Model Overviews, and How the designs evolved follows them in order.
Which model should I buy first?
Start on the Ursus line, at the bottom of the workshop’s range: the Q95 Ursus and the F95 Ursus, liner locks in Micarta over titanium liners with an Elmax blade. Carry one for a month and the next step becomes obvious. That next step is an F3 with an Elmax blade and carbon fiber or Alutex scales, or a Hati Gen 3 with an M390 blade, both current production. At the top of what still counts as entry level is an Astrum in M390, the 100 mm apron liner lock and the newest design in the serial catalog.
The five side by side:
| Step | Knife | Blade | Lock | Steel | Scales | Bearings | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Q95 Ursus | 95 mm | Liner lock | Elmax | Micarta over titanium liners | MRBS | 135 g |
| 1 | F95 Ursus | 95 mm | Liner lock | Elmax | Micarta over titanium liners | MRBS | 132 g |
| 2 | F3 | 95 mm | Liner lock | Elmax | Alutex over titanium liners | MRBS | 138 g |
| 2 | Hati Gen 3 | 95 mm | Frame lock | M390 | TechnoCarbo show scale, titanium lock side | MRBS | 110 g |
| 3 | Astrum | 100 mm | Liner lock with an apron | M390 | Titanium | MRBS | 106 g |
The two Ursus knives take hex bits where the other three take the workshop’s slotted screws. All five are serial production: a certificate in the box, the serial on the box, and dealers selling them new.
Should I buy new or pre-owned?
New from a dealer for a first knife on the Ursus line, pre-owned for anything limited or discontinued, and the warranty is the same either way because it follows the knife. The one trap is buying a limited release inside its release window. Buying, selling and value works both sides through.
Who designs the knives?
Sergey Shirogorov designs every serial model. The exceptions are the collaborations, designed with other makers and built by the workshop, from Dmitry Sinkevich’s long run of projects to the American designers. How the collaborations work names each designer and each run, and The Shirogorov story has the dated history of the workshop itself.
Where are Shirogorov knives made?
In Yaroslavl, Russia. Shirogorov Knives is the Shirogorov Brothers Workshop, founded by Sergey and Igor Shirogorov and run by Sergey since Igor’s death in 2015, and every knife the workshop sells is made there. There is no second plant and no licensed production elsewhere. The Shirogorov story has the workshop’s history in order.
Why do I need special tools to take one apart?
Because the screws are the workshop’s own slotted hardware rather than Torx, and a standard bit set will chew the heads. Bits cut for the slot are the one item a buyer cannot substitute, and the Q95 Ursus and F95 Ursus are the exception because they take hex bits. The service and care FAQ names the drivers and bits that fit, and Tools, supplies and preparation lists what to buy before opening one.
The lines and the tiers
Is the workshop still in production?
Yes. New lines have kept arriving, the F95 Ursus of 2026 the latest of them, and the factory publishes each release on its own news feed. Production has not paused, and the serial catalog, the Custom Division tier and Sergey Shirogorov’s full customs all continue. From the early models to today follows the releases in sequence.
Can I still buy a Shirogorov outside Russia?
Yes. The factory’s distributors and dealers in the United States, Europe and Russia are listed on Where to buy and talk, and the secondary market runs in every one of those places. Since mid-2022 an additional US duty on listed Russian goods has made supply into the United States tighter and more expensive, which shows up as higher asks rather than as an absence of knives. Buying, selling and value explains what the duty does to prices on each side.
How do I read a model name?
The number is usually the blade length in millimeters, as in the F95, the 111 and the Q95, and the letters after it carry the variant, the revision or the tier. The F3 is the exception, a 95 mm blade under a name that is not a length. The models FAQ takes each suffix one at a time, from T and Zero to NL, NS and Gen, and How the designs evolved has the full key.
What are the four tiers?
Serial production is the catalog a dealer sells from. Sprint Runs are small numbered pre-series batches with no catalog listing. Custom Division is the workshop’s limited tier, in production since April 2014, where a serial design is rebuilt with more finishing time and roller bearings. Full customs are Sergey Shirogorov’s own pieces, built by him rather than by the workshop team, and the duck foot pivot appears on those alone. That last distinction is the one buyers get wrong most often: a Custom Division knife is not a custom, and the Custom Division FAQ takes the tier question by question. Most bad purchases come from mixing these up. The tier ladder sets out who builds each tier, how many are made, which bearings each runs and how to tell them apart.
What is a Sprint Run?
A small numbered batch of a new design, or of a production model in an unusual steel, released without a catalog listing. It is its own tier rather than a Custom Division run, and dealer listings confuse the two constantly. The Custom Division FAQ separates them, and the Sprint Run register lists the runs with their sizes and dates.
What is a First Production?
The factory’s first serial issue of a new line: a limited run in its own steel and finish that fixes the dimensions, pivot and lock, followed some months later by the standard serial knife. A First Production is neither a Sprint Run nor a Custom Division piece. The models FAQ says how to tell one from the serial knife in hand, and First Production has the runs in detail.
What is a special edition?
A serial line built once in a theme, with its own steel, scale material, hardware finish and often a matching bead; the Elements series is the clearest example. The knife underneath is the production model, so a special edition sits on the serial tier rather than above it. Special editions has the dates and the full table.
Is a dealer exclusive a tier of its own?
No. It is a serial knife in a configuration made for one dealer, with that dealer’s scale colors, blade finish, milling pattern or packaging, so it stays on the serial tier whatever the listing calls it. The models FAQ gives the examples and the tell.
What is a collaboration?
A design by another maker, built by the workshop and sold as a numbered run, from Dmitry Sinkevich’s projects to the American designers. Collaborations sit beside the tier ladder rather than on a rung of it, and the factory sets each one’s bearings by model rather than by tier. How the collaborations work names every designer and run.
Frame lock or liner lock: does it matter to me?
Both are the workshop’s standard, so this is a preference rather than a quality question. The frame lock locks hard, releases with one hand and gives the clearest feedback. The liner lock lets both sides of the handle wear carbon fiber, G10, Micarta or TechnoCarbo, which is where most of the visual variety in the catalog lives, and weight follows the scale material more than it follows the lock. The models FAQ says which lines use which, and Choosing your first Shirogorov covers what each changes in use.
Does the workshop make left-handed knives?
Yes, under the Lefty name, and the factory has built mirrored configurations on the NeOn, the F95 and the Quantum Ursus, the first of them in 2021. The models FAQ lists them with their dates and covers clip position, which is the question that usually follows.
Is a Shirogorov meant to be carried?
Yes. It is a cutting tool built to be used, and the factory warranty assumes it is used as one, with ordinary wear expected rather than excluded. Carry marks do move a knife into user grade on the secondary market, which is a price consequence rather than a reason not to carry it. The warranty page states what use it covers, and Choosing your first Shirogorov sorts the lines by how you carry.
Which line is the working line?
Ursus. The line takes the workshop’s existing designs and builds them for use rather than for display, at the bottom of the range. The models FAQ says what the name marks and lists every Ursus model with its steels, handle materials, dates and locks.
Prices and buying
What does a Shirogorov cost?
It depends on the tier far more than on the model. Serial production runs from the Ursus line up through the F95 and Hati variants to the Astrum and the 111. Collaborations and Sprint Runs sit above that, Custom Division above them, and full customs at the top. For the five entry-ladder lines:

What is the least expensive Shirogorov?
The least expensive route in is the Ursus line, the workshop’s working line at the bottom of its range. The usual first picks in it are the Q95 Ursus and the F95 Ursus: liner locks in Micarta over titanium liners with an Elmax blade, both serial production and sold new by the factory’s dealers. The all-titanium Q95 Ursus Ti of 2026 is a frame lock. Pre-owned serial knives usually sit below their retail level, so the used market is the other place to look. What each line brings is in the price record, with the figures behind sign-in.
Where are the prices on this site?
In the price record and on each model page, behind sign-in. What every visitor can see without signing in is what the record holds for each line, how many observations it rests on, and when the line was last seen on the market. Figures come with the venue and the date they were observed, because a price without a venue is not a price.
Why is the same knife listed at five different prices?
Because the venue sets the ask, and the ladder has five rungs, running from a dealer’s ask at the top down to what an accepted offer actually settles at. Asking prices are not selling prices at any rung. The buying FAQ names the five in order, and Buying, selling and value has how far under asking knives close.
Are they a good investment?
Buy them to own them. The record shows a hype cycle rather than a straight line, and a few lines have risen over the longer arc. Buying, selling and value has the shape of that cycle, what drives a premium and what the risks are.
Where do I buy one new?
From the factory’s official distributors and dealers, and from nobody else if the official channel is what you want. Recon1 is the US distributor. The buying FAQ names the dealer counts by region and the one European dealer, and Where to buy and talk carries the factory’s own list with what each dealer stocks.
Is there a factory shop?
There is one on shirogorov.com, and for a buyer outside Russia it is rarely the route, because paying from abroad is the obstacle rather than availability. The distributor and the dealers are how a knife reaches most buyers. The buying FAQ covers the shop’s terms and what the factory will ship, and Contacting Shirogorov has the addresses.
How are limited releases sold?
Three ways: by lottery for the most limited pieces, by allocation to a dealer, and by periodic dealer shipments of production models. Each is announced first on the factory news feed, with the run size and the entry rules. The buying FAQ takes the three routes one at a time and says how to catch a limited release at retail.
Where are pre-owned Shirogorovs sold?
On the consignment houses, the dealer-secondary pages, the collector boards and the private groups, each of which prices the same knife differently. The buying FAQ lists the venues with the price behavior of each, Where to buy and talk has their addresses, and the authentication guide has the checklist for buying at a distance.
What is Recon1?
The workshop’s US distributor, in Encino, California. It sells retail and preowned, runs the US lotteries, hosts the US events, and can reissue a certificate for a knife it sold and for a Custom Division knife. Where to buy and talk places it beside the dealers it supplies.
What are the US events?
The shows Recon1 hosts in the United States, the R1 Invitational and the Friday Night Blade Affair among them, where new releases are shown and full customs have surfaced on the floor. The events page carries the calendar with the dates and venues.
Checking a knife
Does a Shirogorov come with a certificate?
Yes. Every serial knife ships with a certificate of authenticity, and for most models the serial lives on the box and the certificate rather than on the knife, which makes the pair the serial record. The buying FAQ lists everything else that should be in the box and what to read it against.
What should I check on a used one?
The tier and the generation first, then the bearing system against the tier the listing claims, then the box and certificate, then the price against the record for that model and tier rather than against the seller’s word for retail. If any of those is missing, ask before paying. The buying FAQ takes the four in order and the authentication guide has the checks by tier.
Who can help me verify one?
Nobody sells authentication as a service. Recon1 can help with knives whose history it has tracked, which does not extend to every knife it has sold, and the BladeForums comparison thread is the best published read on what a counterfeit F95 looks like. The buying FAQ says what can and cannot be verified from a serial number.
What does a missing certificate change?
The price, and nothing about the warranty, because the factory services its knives with or without the certificate. A complete set brings more on the secondary market than a bare knife, without a fixed premium for the paper. The buying FAQ covers reissue, which is possible for some knives and not for others.
Owning one
Is a Shirogorov still under warranty when I am the second owner?
Yes. The limited lifetime warranty attaches to the knife rather than to the person who bought it new, applies wherever it was bought, and survives the loss of the certificate. The service and care FAQ has the transfer rule and how a claim is made, and the warranty page the full terms.
Can I take my Shirogorov apart?
Yes, and doing it for maintenance does not void the warranty. Damage done in the process is a different matter and is not covered, a torn screw above all, so the bits have to fit before anything is turned. The service and care FAQ covers the tools and the exclusions, and Disassembly and pivot tuning the procedure.
How do I look after it?
Keep the pivot clean, oil it lightly, cycle the blade to work the oil in, and use a driver that fills the slotted screws. That plus a monthly look at the screws is most of the routine for a carried knife. The service and care FAQ has the cadence and the oils, and Routine care the full schedule.
Can I sharpen it myself?
Yes, at the factory angle of 41 to 42 degrees, because an edge taken off that angle is a warranty exclusion. Match the bevel the knife came with rather than the numbers on a guided system. The service and care FAQ has the one model ground differently and where sharpening fits in the care routine.
Will the action change as I use the knife?
It settles over the first few hundred deployments and then stays put, so a change that arrives later, or suddenly, is a different matter. The service and care FAQ covers what settling looks like on each bearing system, the words owners use for the action, and what to check when it changes for another reason.
Where do collectors talk?
The Bears’ Den thread on BladeForums, the forum on shirogorov.com, and the private Facebook groups, with the knife subreddits for general questions. Where to buy and talk lists each one with what it is for and how active it is.
